Since moving to Dallas, I have started working part time as a program leader at the Heart House. Heart House is an after school program that provides a safe house and academic support to at risk children in a low income neighborhood of Dallas. Vickery Meadow is a small area packed full of nothing but apartments. Residents are either low income, immigrants, or refugees, so the area is extremely diverse.
There are constantly police everywhere in the area and also patrolling the apartment complex we work in. They often stop in before the kids come while we are still preparing just to say hello and then come in during program hours to say hi to the kids and give them police badge stickers and let them know that they are their friends too.
Early Tuesday morning one of the officers was shot at the complex and is now recovering, with the help of a lot of cards from our first and second graders :)
Fox News came and did this interview with Marybeth and the kids, so I thought I would share it.
